Most potted and garden plants have no chance to develop without fertilization. Here, soil ecosystems are inadequate for growth. Using artificial nutrients is therefore necessary to make up for the lack of certain minerals. Effective fertilization requires knowledge, which is difficult for beginners in gardening. What is liquid fertilizer? Liquid fertilizer is a suitable solution …

Hydroponic Pests- What are Whiteflies and How to Get Rid of Them

10/20/2020

mygrowponics:

Even the most tightly guarded hydroponic system may attract pests.  Previously we discussed one such pest, and now we shall concentrate on the other main pest likely seen.

How To Spot a Whitefly Infestation

image

When small pure white moth-like characters appear and take to the air when the plant is shaken, you are looking at a whitefly infestation in your grow room.  These flies feast on the plant juices, which can quickly turn your indoor hydroponic gardening system into a brown and rotting mess.

Two possible culprits are wreaking havoc on your plants: greenhouse whitefly and citrus whitefly.  Both cause significant damage, but there are also very simple controls to keep the infestation in check and eradicated.

Getting Rid of Your Whitefly Infestation

The first possibility is yellow sticky traps.  Yes; yellow traps will capture whiteflies because the flies are naturally attracted to white.  Collect the flies and dispose of the trap when the infestation is over.  Vacuum cleaners also work, are fun to run, but may not work as well as the traps.

The other possibility to keep flies in check is to use nature against nature.  Green lacewings are one exceptional option, and these will keep flies in check while also keeping further infestations down.

Green lacewing chrysopidae

The flies eventually will die because of a mold that will accumulate on some plants within an indoor hydroponic gardening system.  Soapy water will take care of the mold, although the infestation will be extremely high at this point.

Keeping pests in check is an ongoing battle; good luck in your fight.
